The structural change in the stationary retail trade has left clear traces in recent years: The number of retail shops has decreased, concentration tendencies have increased. The branch mix has changed: Certain sectors are losing significant space (e.g. clothing retail), other sectors such as food and drugstore retail are increasing slightly (in the city centre). Providers accompanying trade in particular (especially gastronomy) are becoming more important in the space mix.
The Corona pandemic is leading to an intensification of many developments that have been underway for years. These include first and foremost the massive online shift and the intensifying competition. The study uses the institute’s structural database to show the changes that have occurred in the number of shops, sales areas and concentration trends in the stationary retail trade in Austria.
