According to surveys conducted by the Austrian Institute for SME Research, Christmas sales are down significantly this year: Up to and including December 19, Christmas sales in retail trade are around 10% below the previous year’s level. Due to the new lockdown with store closures from December 28, an even higher decline is expected for the entire Christmas business in 2020. Christmas sales in stationary retail could fall von from € 1,5 billion 2019 to around € 1.2 billion (gross) 2020.
In contrast, domestic internet retail has been able to benefit from the situation. Online Christmas sales will increase significantly in 2020, probably by 50% to a total of around € 177 million (gross).
